HellO!
The 7th Grade students will be doing slightly different activities over the next 7 weeks. Students in my 1st period class will be working on a Research Paper project over a topic that was assigned to them relating to Asia. Students were given topics from one of the following four categories: culture, cities, emperors, and dynasties. Students are currently working on finding reliable internet sources and creating 20 notecards about relevant information from those articles.
Students in my honors class have been exposed to an overview of the major religions in Asia. Starting tomorrow (and continuing for the remainder of the week), students will be taught about geographical features of Asia and about the division of Asia into distinct regions. We will be focusing primarily on the geographic features of Asia this week and will move into a discussion of the culture of various sections of Asia next week.
Just a reminder, the next payment for students going on the Washington, D.C. trip will be due the 30th of April. The amount of the payment is $71.00. In order to help offset this payment, the students will be having a yard sale fundraiser (tentatively scheduled for the 28th of April). Please let me know if you are interested in helping out with this event or if your child will be able to attend the event. Proceeds for the fundraiser will go to those students who are able to attend the fundraiser.
Please let me know if you have any questions!

SPRING BREAK!!
I hope that you are all enjoying your spring break! I am missing your students already!
As we come back from Spring Break, we will be starting a unit on research as a joint project with your child's English Teachers. Each student will receive his/her own research topic and will be provided with guidance and help as they work over several weeks to create a final research paper/project. I am excited to see your students in action as they research their topic and think critically about Asian history and society.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns! :)

Kony 2012
Hey McGary Families!
This week we are examining the social and political issues that are behind the movement known as Kony 2012. Your students were extremely interested in this topic, so I decided to explore it a little more and challenge the students to think deeper and more critically about the video and the larger movement behind it. This week we will be learning about and discussing the role of the global citizen and the hotly contested issue about whose responsibility it is to protect the people of the world. We will be discussing issues of race, class, gender, governmental policy, and social justice.
Thanks!
Keshia

ISTEP
Hey McGary Families!
As I'm sure that you already know, it is ISTEP week! I know that our students will be pretty burned out from all of the testing, etc., so there will be no lectures and TIPS assignments from me this week :)
This week, your students will be watching a Discovery Channel series that explains how science and social studies are very closely related. We will be looking at landforms and other geographical land features!
If your students are still interested in going on the Washington, D.C. trip in Spring 2013, this is a reminder that their deposits are due to me NO LATER THAN MARCH 15!!! The deposit is $99.00. Please make out all checks to McGary Middle School. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me :)

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
Hello parents!
Last week we finished talking about the basic tenets of Judaism. We had a guest speaker in our classroom from the University of Evansville as well to support the content that we are learning!
Another new addition to our classroom is Miss Arbuthnot. Sarah Arbuthnot is an intern from the University of Evansville. She will be working along with me to teach and direct your children until May 1. Miss Arbuthnot comes with a wealth of experience and she is a great teaching resource in our class! If you have any questions for Miss Arbuthnot, please let me know and I will get you connected :)
This week we have been discussing Christianity and the basic tenets of that religion. We are working on developing our reading and writing skills as we practice comparing and contrasting the beliefs of the most popular world religions.
Next week we will be moving on to a discussion of Islam. The format will be similar to the preceeding two weeks.
As always, contact me if you have any questions or concerns!! :)
